March of Dimes Grant Renewed

March 2007 – The Lower East Side Family Union (LESFU), a community-based organization which preserves, strengthens and empowers poor and disadvantaged families, has received renewed funding from the March of Dimes to continue its work in the Expectant Parent Workshop and Home Visitation Initiative, which will continue educate high-risk, underserved women of childbearing age about the importance of early prenatal care, and ensure that they have the support they need to access prenatal health care services to work towards reducing premature births, low birth weight, birth defects and infant mortality. ESL (English as a Second Language)

April 2007 – LESFU Queens has started an ESL (English as a Second Language) class for adults, most of whom have a Beginner or Intermediate level of English Proficiency. The class meets 2 days a week, 2 hours a day, for 8 weeks. For more information, please contact our Queens Office.

Fresh Air Fund Collaboration

Summer 2007 – LESFU is collaborating with the Fresh Air Fund, to recruit and enroll children of diverse backgrounds in the Fresh Air Fund's summer programs for children. Bilingual Spanish and Chinese speaking staff are available at both sites to answer questions and accept applications for Summer 2007 programs. Parenting Classes

LESFU offers parenting classes to parents in our Preventive Services program as well as perents in the community in both Spanish and Chinese. Parents who complete the program are invited to a graduation celebration and receive certificates of completion. Inquiries regarding class dates and availability can be made by contacting each individual site.
